"American Hostage"

MGM+ Series Marketing

Context: American Hostage is a prestige limited series adapted from a podcast, starring Jon Hamm, telling the story of a 1977 hostage crisis through the radio reporter who ended up negotiating on air. Prestige is the hardest thing to sell through influencer, because what makes the show good, the writing, the cinematography, the period design, is exactly what a standard paid post flattens into “watch this.”

Challenge: Establish American Hostage as prestige television and expand into a new female audience, on a smaller creator budget than other campaigns.

Approach: I cast for craft instead of reach. Every creator on the roster teaches their audience how television actually gets made, and each one took a different lens on the series, so the campaign built one argument from four angles. @talkswithatvwriter, a screenwriting educator, broke down the podcast adaptation and the show’s central theme of power through Tony and Fred’s first on-air exchange. Film critic @jeffrauseo reviewed the 1970s production design, the cast, and the true story underneath it. @cinemahow pulled the composition apart shot by shot, frame-within-a-frame and rule of thirds. @colorpalette.cinema explored the warm 1970s colorscape and how the palette builds period atmosphere. I selected against reach, relevance, and resonance, weighting audience demographics toward the new female target and engagement rate to prioritize creators with an active audience rather than a large one. Because each creator was teaching instead of endorsing, viewers stayed for the whole breakdown rather than scrolling past an ad.

Outcome: The campaign delivered 18.4M views and 69.8K engagements at a $0.001 CPV and $0.36 CPE, generating $477.2K in earned media value.
